Accounts of the Years enclose herewith.
As I have mentioned in that Memorandum, the surplus notice was bought to return from Ferry in 1847 until I could satisfy myself as to the cause. I directed it to be put aside, intending, when I had so satisfied myself, to bring it out with my accompanying explanation.
At the subsequent Survey held during the Year 1848, I mentioned the fact of the surplus being in the Chest, and stated the reasons for not having brought it to account, and my proposal to do so at the first fitting opportunity.
No objection was made to their arrangement, accompanying certificates will show, and at the close of 1848 the sum of £39.8.2 was placed on the debit side of the Treasurer's Account.
The Surveys during 1848, I may remark, were irregular, in consequence of the misunderstandings received at the end of 1847.
The Carolus Dollars, to which I allude in the Memorandum, were not received earlier than the latter part of 1847, and are met with; but should
